Roku has zero monthly or annual fees. Once you have paid the purchase fee, your account is ready for use and you do not need to commit to any recurring payments (neither annual or monthly) besides subscriptions to third party applications. Examples include Netflix, Hulu, Prime, or Disney Plus.
Roku will never charge you a fee for creating an account or activating it. You should not choose to pay for one of these ‘fake’ charges if you get an email, call or notification asking for one as they are scams.
To be clear: Roku is free. You do not have to pay for Roku and it there are no paid monthly subscription options for an account.
Keep in mind that having a Roku Account is free and any payments that you might see on your Roku bill statement are typically from third party applications (such as Netflix, Hulu,

Many Roku scams are well known and they are usually done by a fraudulent entity contacting Roku users via phone and telling the user there is a “Activation fee” and they will shut off their Roku if it is not paid. Do not entertain these scams.
Roku Hacks, on the other hand are free and quite useful for streaming
I personally use the Roku streaming stick 4k and I haven’t experienced Roku account monthly fees when using it.
In this post we are going to cover all the Roku Costs that you could potentially be paying for with a Roku account/subscription via Roku TV, Roku Stick, and other Roku players.

For example, there are multiple companies that make Roku TVs such as Phillips, Sharp, TCL, Hisense, Element, Hitachi, RCA, JVC, and Magnavox.
We determined these prices by seeking online and manually adding up and averaging all the different TV sizes from each manufacturer from major retailers. The larger the Roku TV size, the more it typically costs.
Here is the average price of several different Roku TVs based on the manufacturer.
Roku TV (sorted by Manufacturer) | Average Price |
Phillips | $528 |
TCL | $415 |
Sharp | $421 |
Hisense | $375 |
Element | $408 |
RCA | $348 |
Hitachi | $387 |
Magnavox | $398 |
JVC | $405 |
These are “smart TVs” which have the Roku operating system built-in, allowing users to access Roku’s full range of streaming channels (via the Roku channel store) and features without the need for an external device such as a streaming player or set top box.
You can also use Roku TV as a smart home hub which allows you to control additional devices in your home such as your ring doorbell, smart locks, and other devices.
You can also browse the Internet on Roku and use web-based apps. Voice control is possible through the microphone on your Roku TV remote. If your Roku remote is an old model, then you may want a Roku TV remote replacement.
The Roku Warner Media Charge (Solved)
The solution for the Roku Warner Media charge on Roku is to visit the account & billing section of Roku. It is significantly more effective to get help from the official Roku billing team rather than search through our account endlessly for solutions.
- First you will contact Billing support at support.roku.com/contactus
- Next, choose ‘Questions on account and billing‘
- Finally, submit your ticket and wait for the proper support to determine if a refund is required.
Anecdotally, I have seen this solution work better than any others available today.
Tip: By using a hidden code, there are new free Premium Roku private channels you can access. These are secret channels that only Roku has and nobody is telling you about.
People typically see a $14.99 charge on their credit card for months until they recognize the unknown charge. It states it is for Roku for Warner Media When you log into my Roku account online. This is seen by visiting the ‘Manage Your Subscriptions’ section. it may say you don’t have any subscriptions.
Netflix and Hulu Charges on Roku
On Roku, Netflix and Hulu are both applications that you can use for streaming, and these are charged monthly for and have their own costs and billing requirements.
Netflix and Hulu are on your Roku as available applications, but Roku themselves does not Bill you since these are third party applications. Roku devices are simply the container, which acts as a middle man when purchasing on Roku.

Does Roku require a subscription?
Roku does not require a paid subscription and you do not have to pay any monthly fees to use Roku. However, Roku requires a valid, reliable internet connection from a service provider (like Xfinity) which could cost money.
To be clear there is no monthly subscription fee or annual subscription fee for a Roku account, excluding premium applications, video content, and streams that Roku has available.
Do the prices per month vary based on the Roku device?
No, the price per month, regardless of the type of Roku device, does not vary at all. However, certain third party apps will only provide benefits that a premium Roku device can handle.
For example, paying extra per month for 4k UHD stream quality on Netflix won’t benefit a user using a Roku Express because the base model can only handle up to 1080P (HD). However, a Roku Premier or Roku Ultra LT can stream 4K.
Below is every type of Roku device available and the costs that are associated with each:
Roku Device Type | Monthly Cost | Total Cost of device (varies) | Features |
Roku Premiere | $0.00 | $35 | Mid-tier Roku device that streams 4K HD quality, Airplay capable |
Roku Express | $0.00 | $30 – $45 | Lower cost Roku device for streaming 1080P |
Roku Streaming Stick+ | $0.00 | $45 | Long range streaming device with Roku Voice remote |
Roku TV | $0.00 | $100 – $1000+ | 4K, QLEd, Smart TV embedded |
Roku Ultra Ultra | $0.00 | $100 | Most powerful Roku device, Roku Ultra LT is an alternative |
Roku Smart Soundbar | $0.00 | $179 | Bluetooth Roku device |
Roku StreamBar | $0.00 | $100 | Combines Roku with Audio simutaneously |

How much does Roku cost per year?
Roku costs $0 per year outside of the initial purchase of the streaming device. You will have to pay additional charges for extra Roku accessories like a remote and soundbars. Third party services can cost anywhere from $5 – $100+ per year or month depending on the service.
The only reason Roku gives you the option to enter your credit card information during setup is to allow you to purchase third party subscriptions such as premium channels (ex. Netflix).
The device comes at an affordable cost and supports free and paid streaming applications. By not subscribing to unwanted channels, you can even budget your monthly Roku bill accordingly..
I often get asked, “How much does Roku cost?” and “What do premium channels cost”.
To activate Roku, there should be no charge. You do not need to pay a fee in any way, shape or form.
Fact: You do not have to pay any recurring fees to use Roku. Roku has free channels and premium channels are optional.
Your Roku device must be connected to your my Roku account after you create a free Roku account. This is done when you set the device up initially.
Does Roku have any monthly costs at all?
Initial payment for the Roku device is required. There is no fee thereafter, nor are subscriptions required unless you require a third party apps (ex. Netflix, Hulu+ or Youtube TV)
Premium Streaming services or TV channels come with a subscription fee, and is not much different than using a Firestick, Smart TV softwares, or other popular streaming players.
It is common for someone that owns a Roku to be skeptical and wonder whether a monthly cost is required. This may be because traditional TV packages, such as the type that Xfinity offers, require a recurring cost that can add up over the years.
The main difference is that Roku utilizes applications by streaming over the internet (and not through cable, which many families are used to)
Are your Roku Private Channels Not Working Anymore? There has been updates about Roku getting rid of the secret, free Roku Private channels. Roku beta channels are the substitute for this and there are no monthly costs involved.
Despite having a premium subscription, Roku Channel offers a lot of free content! But, as you know, nothing comes for free. If there are any free trial periods on the Roku app before you buy, check that first and I advise you to review the fine print carefully before committing.
You’ll still need a reliable internet connection and may have to watch some ads if you use a popular streaming service like Hulu, but it’s hard to refute that Roku is a strong competitor as its user interface is simple and straightforward to harness.
Streaming services such as Showtime and STARZ can be accessed through optional premium subscriptions.
How much is Xfinity on Roku?
Xfinity stream app does not require a purchase price to download or any extra monthly fees on top of your current Xfinity plan. Roku simply allows the Xfinity app to use your current plan.
This means, the Xfinity plan you choose will be the same Regardless of where you stream it from (Roku, Firestick, Apple TV, Samsung, etc). This is because the app is free and you’re simply channeling your subscription through the streaming device or Smart TV.
How much does the Xfinity app cost on Roku? The Xfinity Stream app is available for download without any purchase fees or added monthly charges, as long as you have an existing Xfinity plan.
When you use the app on a Roku device it simply leverages your existing Xfinity plan. This means that your chosen plan remains the same – regardless of where you access the content from (Roku, Firestick, Apple TV, Samsung, or any other compatible device). (source)
This is possible because the app is not only free, but serves as a “conduit” for your subscription through the streaming device or Smart TV
…allowing for seamless access to your content without any additional costs – but the features do differ.
When using the Xfinity app on Roku. you may be missing out on certain features
While the Xfinity app on Roku may not cost extra, it does lack a few features… which is important to note considering the price of the plan doesn’t change. In fact, the Xfinity Stream app on a ‘Partner Device’ (ex Firestick or Apple TV), does not offer the same features as the Xfinity X1 set-top box cable.
It does not support control through Xfinity Voice Remote, movie and TV show rentals through Xfinity On Demand (except on Roku and Amazon Fire TV), Pay Per View event rentals, or Xfinity apps on X1 such as Voicemail, xFi and My Account, and features such as the Sports companion experience.
Related: How to Fix Xfinity Not Working on Roku
Additionally, streaming channels such as Pandora, YouTube, and Netflix may not be available through the app, but may be accessible through the Partner Device’s platform. This is important to note
For beta users of the Roku set-top box, Xfinity TV app once offered a deal in 2017 where a $10 monthly charge for using the app was waived. This is no longer an offer.
All Possible Charges Associated with Roku:
The Roku app store does offer several apps and channels that require subscriptions in order to access.t! It’s common for time to pass by and see a Roku charge on your bill that is unrecognizable.

The above is a list of 265 different streaming options, but there are many more available on the Roku website. Features such as Dolby vision, Dolby Audio, ethernet ports are already embedded in the device and do not cost extra.
Phone call about Roku charging each month
Roku will never call you and inform you that you need to pay for a premium service of some type.
Many fraudulent ‘fake’ companies have been known to call Roku users and inform them that they need to pay a fee or else they will stop your Roku service. This is a scam and it is best to ignore these calls or report them to Roku support.
I was recently asked for advice from someone who was called by a blocked number and continually reached out about Roku monthly subscriptions they owe, which as we discussed earlier does not exist.
Roku accounts are always 100% free to create (besides having an internet connection to do so).
Scams demanding payment to create a Roku account: No one should ask for your credit card information to create a Roku account or register your streaming device (ex. Roku Express). Some people even pretend to be “support agents” for Roku. Do not answer or speak to these fraudulent calls.
Is the Internet required for a Roku or apps on Roku?
Yes, Roku requires a reliable internet connection to send and receive data for streaming. You can not stream without Wi-Fi or connection via ethernet because Roku does not get its data the same way a cable subscription from a service provider allows for.
Wi-Fi works well and has been tested by the mediapeanut.com team, but when your Roku connection is weak you may want to test an ethernet connection, especially if you’re streaming 4K UHD quality and are having issues a router reset won’t fix the slow speed. You may also want to see How To connect Roku & Roku TV to WiFi without using your remote
You’ll also want to see How to Get an Internet Browser on Roku (Roku Web Browser). In this case, some are paid, most do not cost anything.
Why won’t my Roku TV play any apps or movies until I check the connection?
This has nothing to do with not paying any charges or monthly costs associated with Roku. If you’re Roku TV won’t play any of the apps until you check the connection for the internet under settings there’s a few solutions we’ve researched for you to try.
Upon checking the connection, everything appears to be working normally. This can be frustrating. When you connect a Roku TV to ethernet this issue does not happen. It is more common on a Roku stick or Roku Ultra.
The solution is to reset the modem for at least 30 seconds,, and if that doesn’t work… reset the TV for 60 seconds.
Rokus can be used without Wi-Fi, but they have very limited features if you decide to use it this way.. If you don’t have an internet connection, you can use an external hard drive or a fast Micro SD with an adapter to watch content on the Roku.
Additional Costs: Why is Roku charging me every month?
Roku should not be charging you every month because they do not have a monthly subscription. However, Roku does have in-app purchases.
So, if you have Netflix, Hulu, Youtube TV, Fubo, Sling TV, or other services being used on Roku, then any monthly or annual recurring costs that are associated would be charged by those services (and not Roku).
Important: If you receive a call from someone threatening to shut off your “service”, then this may be a scam.
For example, there was a lifetime Netflix package phone scammers would try to sell to Roku users; this should be avoided.
Your device is yours once you’ve paid for it. It’s your choice whether to add paid channels and several monthly costs to your account via third party apps. However, there are a number of free services available, such as Roku private channels.
My tech team has even witnessed Roku users trying to get Zoom (for meetings) on their Roku to video conference. In this case you’ll probably want a tablet or computer, view the Best Tablets for Zoom Calls & Classes if you are video calling for class, not Roku!
Adding the channel to your Roku home screen and logging in will let you access pre existing services you are subscribed to. You can also manage your Roku subscriptions through your account if you have added a Payment method such as check card or credit card. This can also be done on the My Roku website..
What are the costs for channels on Roku?
There are no costs for channels on Roku unless you are subscribing to a premium service.
There are several free Roku channels associated with your free Roku account, which you can register upon setting up your device.
As soon as you have created a Roku account, you can link the settings and preferences to your other Roku devices.
In other words, if you own several different Roku devices but don’t want to lose your settings, then you can sync the settings between them.
In order to enjoy the full range of premium services of the streaming channels available on Roku, you can subscribe to the paid channels. Prices for these services vary greatly depending on the channel and whether you choose annual or monthly.
Typically, annual services are 5%-15% cheaper than monthly based on the data we’ve gathered across 20+ channels. However, this information may vary based on the device and service.
Depending on the channel, there may be a one-time fee or monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual subscription fee. If you wish to stream cable-TV-like content, streaming channels like RedBox, Sling TV, FuboTV, or Netflix are all popular options. These channels begin at a monthly cost of $5+ and above.
Alternatively, if you want to watch movies, sports, TV shows, and more, you can consider a monthly membership for channels such as: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Cinemax.
Also, keep in mind that Roku isn’t the only budget device to watch Netflix on, there are powerful Budget Tablets for Watching Netflix you can also use.
How can I talk to a Live person about my Roku Bill?
I get asked quite frequently “How can I talk to a live person on my Roku?” You’ll need to visit the Roku site and visit their contact page. If you can not find the correct department, simply log into your Roku account first and navigate through the account settings for “Roku support” or “contact info for Roku”.
Occasionally the average Roku user may find a charge on Roku and are uncertain where or how this charge came about. If you check your purchase history and can’t find where this charge is from. You may want to speak to a live person from Roku to explain further.
Many users only watch movies and stream using free Roku channels. However the average user, according to our recent poll on Roku streaming, admitted they have purchased a premium channel and forgot they agreed to the purchase.
Also, our recent survey from our Roku fan audience has revealed that it’s very common for Roku users to get frustrated, primarily because many of these fees are charged on an annual basis or monthly basis and there’s no clear explanation what the charge actually is.
What should I do if I’m getting charged by Roku?
If you are charged by Roku and you aren’t sure why, you should login to your Roku account and check if there are any pending charges. Next, you can review the invoice of your billing and see if the purchase history shows a more detailed note on what Roku believes you purchased.
If there is no information you may want to check if the charge is actually from Roku themselves and not a different company.
However, If you signed up for a subscription channel like Showtime, HBO max, or Fubo TV, or simply bought a Roku Channel premium, you will receive a statement that can be viewed.
Here’s how to determine your charges via Billing on Roku. This will allow you to check what you are getting billed for monthly on Roku:
- First, confirm the charge is not from a third party service.
- Next, Visit your Roku account at My Roku
- After, Login and navigate to purchase history
- Scroll to the end of the page and locate Content or products
- Finally, Visit details to see the entire description of the purchase.
If you still can’t locate the monthly charge, it is time to contact Roku support and/or create a ticket.
Bottom Line:
There are absolutely no monthly or annual costs or charges at all to use Roku. Once you pay the purchase fee, your account is ready to use and there are no recurring payments to commit to besides extra premium channels from third party apps within Roku.
Some channels and apps that are available on Roku will cost extra and are monthly subscriptions. Good examples of this are Disney Plus, Prime video, HBO max, and Netflix.
Furthermore there are a few apps and channels available on Roku that require subscriptions.nd more. These extra channels typically have a recurring cost range from $10.99 and up per month (or $100+ annual total)
