Laptop Lifespan: How Long Do Laptops Last?
When it comes to determining the lifespan of a laptop, it is important to note that there are many factors that can influence the longevity of the device.
Personal laptops that are used for moderate activities such as browsing the internet and completing basic tasks will last between 3-5 years, while a more expensive business laptop that is used daily have an average lifespan of 5-7 years on average.
- Heavy Laptop usage lifespan: Lifespan of a laptop may be shorter for those who engage in activities that require more advanced computing power, such as gaming. For example, gaming laptops may need replacement sooner than the laptops business professionals might use.
- Credible name brand influences longevity of the laptop: Additionally, laptops from credible name brands tend to last longer than those from lesser-known manufacturers. These include 2-in-1 laptops as well as those that run Windows and Mac OS.
- Technology advancing will shorten the laptop lifespan: Another factor to consider is that technology is constantly advancing, and software updates are released regularly. These updates may require more advanced hardware, which may cause you to upgrade or replace your laptop early.
When it comes to 2-in1 laptops, the lifespan is slightly shorter, with most experts estimating that they can last between 2-4 years. This is due to the longevity being affected by the ability to customize components and the level of maintenance it receives.

It’s important to note that while you may get better features or longer battery life when you spend more on a laptop, the lifespan of the device itself doesn’t necessarily increase significantly once you reach a certain price point.
While cost is definitely a factor to consider when determining the lifespan of a laptop, it’s important to keep in mind that the lifespan doesn’t increase significantly once you reach a certain price point. Name brand laptops like Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Acer, HP, and gaming laptops like ASUS tend to last longer than other laptops I’ve tested.
Is 6 hours battery life enough for a laptop
To answer this question briefly, yes. A 6 hour battery should be sufficient for most casual users. Of course, there are some professionals who need more than that.
For example, if you are a photographer who is constantly on the go, you should opt for a laptop that offers at least 10 hours of battery life. Ultimately, battery life depends on your personal needs and preferences.
Related: How Long does the battery in a MacBook Pro Last?
But you should always keep in mind that your laptop’s battery life will likely decrease over the years. Also, the actual autonomy is usually less than the brand claims.
So if you need a laptop that lasts at least 8 hours, you should go for one that lasts 10 or more.
Is 6 hours of laptop battery life long enough enough for gamers and business professionals?
6 hours of battery life (out of the box) is not enough for Business professionals who travel frequently – you may find yourself needing 8 hours without a outlet. Laptop makers are also facing competition with long-running tablets and should compare favorably in terms of battery life.
A gaming laptop, for example, might only last for an hour and a half to two hours on a single charge because the video games and demanding tasks it requires from the computer also increase.
Related: How Long do Tablets Last (iPad, Android, Samsung)
Battery life is a critical factor to consider when purchasing a laptop, and the question of whether 6 hours is enough for a device can be a tricky one to answer.
In the past, 6 hours of battery life was considered the norm for laptops, but today, many manufacturers aim for 8 hours or more. It’s worth noting that the actual battery life can vary depending on the type of laptop and the intended use.
In the past, most laptops with a 65 Whr battery was considered average for general tasks such as emailing, web surfing, and watching videos. However, as technology grew and more demanding tasks such as gaming or 4K video editing have become more common, the requirements for batteries on a laptop also grew.
For most users, 6 hours of battery life is probably average and sufficient for general tasks, but it may not be enough for those who need to use their laptops for extended periods of time without access to a power outlet.
Can a well cared for laptop last 10 years?
Can a laptop last 10 years? It is unlikely that a laptop can last 10 years without experiencing significant performance issues, but they absolutely can.
If you take good care of your laptop and its battery, there’s a good chance it will last longer than average, but there are some factors to consider:
The technology in laptops is advancing at such a rapid pace that the hardware and software quickly become outdated.
This means that the battery life after 10 years, the hardware, and the software will not last this long as far as functionality and practical uses are concerned.
This means if you plan to use it as your everyday laptop (or even once a month) it’s unlikely basic tasks will perform smoothly.
Will a laptop from apple or microsoft last 10 years?
Laptops from Apple and Microsoft, such as the MacBook and the Surface, probably have the best shot at lasting 10 years, but it is still unlikely.
So if you want your device to last as long as possible, Apple is probably your best bet – one thing to note: you can not upgrade macs after you buy them so make sure you get what you’re looking for during the initial purchase.
How Often Should I Shut Down my MacBook? (Every Night?)
However, even these laptops will likely experience issues with their battery life, hardware, and software after a decade of use.
Additionally, it is unlikely that the keyboard will last 10 years, and while it is likely that the screen will last that long, it may have some cracks.
While laptops may be able to last 10 years mechanically, the pace of technology means that after a decade, the machine simply may not be capable of doing the job anymore.
The best option for someone who wants a laptop that lasts a long time is to buy a well-made laptop that you can upgrade in five years or so.
Three things to worry about are memory, storage and battery life. However, you will have to pay the highest possible price, and you will probably buy more than you need.
Will gaming laptops last 10 years?
Laptops used for gaming purposes will likely not last 10 years, probably 4 years. The graphics card, processor, and other components that are essential for gaming are quickly outdated and replaced with newer, more powerful options.
This means that a laptop that was once suitable for gaming may no longer be able to handle the latest games and software.
Can a well cared for laptop last 20 years long?
No. While it is possible for a laptop to last 20 years, it is highly unlikely. The constant advancement of technology and the need for software updates and hardware upgrades make it difficult for a laptop to function for such a long period of time. Even if a laptop lasts for 20 years, it is likely to be outdated and unable to meet the daily needs of a user.
It is possible for a laptop to last 20 years, but it is highly unlikely. The reason for this is that technology is constantly advancing, and software updates are released regularly. These updates may require more advanced hardware, which can limit the lifespan of a laptop.
Additionally, hardware components, such as the processor, memory, and storage, become obsolete over time, which can also affect the performance of the device.
Even if a laptop is well-maintained and has been upgraded over time, it is highly unlikely that it will still be functional after 20 years.
The chances of hardware components and software updates being compatible with a 20-year-old laptop are slim, and the device will likely be outdated in terms of hardware components. This means that the performance of the device will be greatly affected, and it will not be able to meet the daily needs of a user.
How long do gaming laptops last?
Most gaming laptops will last on average 4 years if you use it at least twice a week for intense gaming sessions over 2 hours long.
One of the key factors is the quality of the hardware. Gaming laptops that are equipped with better hardware, such as high-end graphics cards, tend to last longer than those with lower quality components.
Brand Name matters
This is because they are less likely to fail or become obsolete. Another important factor is the brand of the laptop. Gaming laptops from credible name brand manufacturers, such as Acer and MSI, tend to last longer than those from less well-known manufacturers.
These companies have a reputation for producing high-quality and durable laptops that are designed to handle demanding tasks such as gaming. The intended use of the laptop is also an important factor to consider. Gamers who play MMO games, steam games, and compete in gaming tournaments tend to have higher demands for their laptops and therefore will have a shorter lifespan compared to casual gamers.
Resolution and frame rate
Additionally, the resolution and frame rate of the game being played is also a factor, for example, 4k 60fps games will have a more demanding hardware requirements than a game running at 1080p 30fps. It’s worth noting that even Macbook has gaming laptops that are suitable for gaming, but their lifespan may be shorter than those specifically designed for gaming.
Quality of hardware
Ultimately, the lifespan of a gaming laptop will depend on a number of factors, including the quality of the hardware, the brand of the laptop, and the intended use of the device. Gamers who want a laptop that will last longer should look for a device with high-quality hardware from a credible name brand manufacturer.

Using a gaming laptop beyond gaming
To determine how long a gaming laptop will last, you should first consider what tasks you need it for. For example, all gaming laptops have a lifespan of at least 4 years when it comes to simple tasks like browsing the web, sending emails, watching movies, etc.
Demanding applications (e.g. 3D editing software, animation, etc.), on the other hand, will shorten your laptop’s lifespan to about 4 years. If you want to run new (or updated) games and software, you may need to upgrade to a new laptop even sooner.
To avoid this, you can opt for a high-end gaming laptop that will stay relevant and powerful for longer than 4 years.
How to make your laptop last longer
Taking care of your laptop is essential in ensuring its longevity. There are several ways to treat a laptop well, including:
- Properly managing the battery: To extend the life of your battery, it is important to remove the charging cable once the device is fully charged. This prevents overcharging, which can damage the battery over time.

In this section, we will take a look at the average lifespan of laptops sorted by brand, to help you make an informed decision when choosing a laptop that will stand the test of time:
How long do Dell laptops last
Did you know that the first Dell computers were manufactured and sold by Michael Dell himself back in 1984? But that was just an exciting beginning. Since then, Dell has become one of the most popular and trusted brands for PCs and laptops.
Although Dell has used Linux OS for some laptops, most of the brand’s devices include Windows. The average lifespan of a Dell laptop is approximately 3-7 years.
How long do Acer laptops last
Acer is a Taiwanese electronics company founded in 1976. Originally, the company was called Multitech. Since the 00s, Acer has become one of the most popular suppliers of personal computers.
With numerous entry-level and powerful laptops, desktops, Chromebooks, tablets and mobile phones, the brand has gained a lot of popularity.
When it comes to reliability, Acer is a trusted company. To be precise, the brand’s laptops usually last around 3-6 years.
How long do Asus laptops last
ASUS is a name inspired by the mythological winged horse of ancient Greece named Pegasus. This is why the name symbolizes speed and learning. And those are some of the qualities that ASUS utilizes to create its devices.
See: 10 Best Laptops for Sketchup (Designers Guide)
So ASUS is a manufacturer that is widely known for its powerful high-end laptops. However, this doesn’t mean that ASUS laptops have a shorter lifespan. In fact, most ASUS devices last 3-6 years.
How long do HP laptops last

This unique expertise is also reflected in the HP laptops. Although most HP devices are budget friendly, their average lifespan is 3-7 years.
When should you Upgrade & Replace your Laptop?
If you are unsatisfied with your laptop, you can either upgrade its components (RAM, SSD) or buy a new one. However, there are some cases when we can not decide whether to upgrade our laptop or just buy a new one.
If this is the case with you, let us make this decision easier for you. First of all, there are certain advantages and disadvantages of repairing/upgrading your laptop versus buying a new one.
The first thing you should check is the cost. Also, if your laptop is quite old (5 years or more), chances are that you will not be able to find spare parts to upgrade or repair your machine. But you can search marketplaces like eBay for used and new parts at a good price.
If you’re using a laptop for animation or digital art, you may want to upgrade sooner due to the toll constant use will take on your device.
So if the parts needed for an upgrade are very expensive, it might be better to buy a new device. Remember that upgrading your laptop does not necessarily extend its life. On the contrary, a new device will last for at least 3 years.
How long should you keep a laptop?
You are the one who decides whether you should keep or replace your laptop. If you are unsatisfied with the performance or battery life of your device, it may be better to replace it.
So, you should keep your laptop for the period that is relevant to your needs. For example, if your laptop is not meeting your professional or personal needs, you should definitely replace it with a more powerful device.

Laptop Battery Lifespan Explained
After some research, we found out that the average battery life depends on whether it is a 2-cell or 3-cell battery. Laptops with a 2-cell battery last about 3-4 hours. 3-cell batteries, on the other hand, have an average lifespan of 5-6 hours.
Of course, the battery lifespan of your laptop also depends on the usage. For example, tasks like web browsing and word processing use less power than games and video editing software.
Finally, how long your battery lasts also depends on the brand. For example, the latest Apple MacBooks are so energy efficient that they can last up to 11 hours (for tasks like web browsing).
What’s the average battery cycle use per year for laptops
Considering that most of us charge our laptops (used as primary devices) once per day, the average battery cycle use per year for laptops is around 350 cycles. Of course, that depends on the usage and the hours that someone spends in front of their device.
That said, a good laptop battery lasts around 1,000 charge cycles (3-4 years). Finally, laptop batteries shouldn’t get a decrease in performance for (at least) 500 cycles.
How long should a laptop battery last per session?
Depending on the quality and price of a laptop, the battery should last between 3 and 5 hours per session. Of course, there are devices with exceptional battery life. The brand new MacBook Pro, for example, can easily last 10 hours.
How long your laptop’s battery lasts also depends on the task you are currently engaged in. To be precise, everyday tasks like browsing Safari or reading an eBook will result in longer battery lifespan.
On the other hand, software like Adobe Photoshop and games like PUBG consume an extreme amount of power. So you can expect your laptop’s battery to last less time when performing such tasks.

A good business/commercial grade laptop from HP, Dell, or Lenovo will "last" for 15 to 20 years at least, oftentimes longer. Yes, you'll have to replace the battery a few times, and re-install and/or upgrade the operating system once or twice. Consumer grade garbage from a big box store will very often develop permanent problems before 10 years. I have an HP laptop from 2010 that I still use frequently - and its hardly an exception, there are plenty out there like it.
